Howdy folks. I rarely write anything much on Newsvine anymore but after studying the race for the best picture of 2010 I felt I had to make a statement. I confess that I have only seen 3 of the contenders but they seem to be the top 3 contenders so here are my opinions.
"The Kings Speech". What can I say about this movie that hasn't already been said? Everthing about it is first class including the acting, direction, production and so on but do you know what? As much as I enjoyed it I must say that it is great movie in the tradition of past Oscar movies but does not have the impact of a certain other nominee which will remain nameless for a few minutes.
"Inception" was a truly original idea with a great star in the main role but ,sadly, turned into nothing more than a routine action thriller somewhere along the line. Hardly an Oscar winning movie.
Now we get to my pick, "Winter's Bone." I hardly know where to start in describing this movie. First of all I must say it is the most terrifying movie I have ever seen and that includes all of the Universal horror movies of the 1930's. Every scene, every moment is filled with such suspense and fear that it seems like a horror movie but it isn't a horror movie. It is a real life movie that most likely is based on real life events. Besides being nominated for best picture Jennifer Lawrence has been nominated for best actress and John Hawkes for best supporting actor and I hope they win. This is a movie that will stick in your mind forever. The sheer menace of most of the characters reminds me of Robert Mitchum in the "Night of the Hunter". An interesting side note is that this film was actually filmed on location, the Missouri Ozarks, and not "on location" in Southern California as so many other on location films are.
I have not seen the other nominated pictures, so I apologize for not mentioning them, but "Winter's Bone" is so incredible I felt compelled to make a statement, by god.
