We all know that food tastes better when you are out in the woods cooking it over a real live campfire. It really is amazing how this works but it is a fact. By camping out I mean cooking over a wood fire and not cooking in your motorhome as that is only outdoor cooking in the broadest sense of the word. I am talking about the real deal where you sleep in a tent or out in the open with a log for a pillow and where you smell like smoke and are as dirty as heck.
I have camped out maybe a few million times and have mostly eaten crap, like the beans and hot dogs when I was a kid in the Boy Scouts, but I gobbled down whatever it was like it was my last meal on Earth. The many many freeze dried meals I have eaten while backpacking hardly even count as food by the way. I think the best camping meal I have ever eaten was something so simple yet so good that I still cook it in my kitchen to this day and that is fried potatoes with ground beef, garlic and onions and topped with cheddar cheese. Very simple but tasty and it sure beats hotdogs and beans. The hunk of beef with cream of mushroom and onion soup wrapped in aluminum foil comes in a close second.
Does anyone have their favorite to share? If I was camping out and eating what those women in the picture were cooking I would have enjoyed it whatever it was.
