Writing a food article for Newsvine or posting a recipe on the interet is usually a flame free experience but not always as I will illustrate for you. This happened way back in the 1980s when all we had was Usnet. No fancy HTML, no web no nothing. I liked to read the posts on alt.cooking (I think that was the group name) and it was real peaceful until one person posted his or her grandmother's old spaghetti sauce recipe that she got from her mother in Italy. Part of the recipe included using a #2 can of tomatoes. The next day someone told her that her recipe wasn't authentic because they didn't have cans back in those days. What followed was the biggest meanest flame war I have ever seen on Usenet and that is saying a lot. The two original combatants were soon forgotten as thousand of people jumped in calling each other every imaginable name and I believe there were even some death threats made! It wasn't long before the professional flamers like the Meowers got wind of the war and invaded the newsgroup. I am cracking myself up writing this lol.
It all ended in disaster as the Meowers made such a mess of the group that everyone just gave up and left. The group never recovered. MEOW!
This is a true tale to the best of my recollection and a warning on what can happen if you use canned tomatoes to make spaghetti sauce.
