It is Saturday night and I am bored and the NASCAR race has about ended so how about an article about two of the greatest actors who have ever lived? For those of you youngsters who have seen either of them I encourage you to go to Amazon or somewhere and watch some of their movies. For you people of normal age, like me, which one was the best?

I really can't say because they were both so exceptional that it would take pages to list all of the movies they starred in. I can't even list their best movies because it would still be many pages long. If I was forced to choose their best movies I would say James Stewart in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and Henry Fonda in The Grapes of Wrath though Fonda's performance in Once Upon a Time in the Old West is an amazing achievement.

So which was was the best? I dunno. Why don't you tell me.

No way. I love a good John Wayne western, but he was not nearly as versatile as these other two actors.

I voted for Jimmy, but only by the slimmest of margins. They were both superb. The Golden Age of Hollywood was an incredible cinematic period, with dozens of top-caliber actors, directors, producers, and writers. It's not the same today.

WOW! Differently a tough question. I'm going with James Stewart ONLY because of his longevity, although I love them both as actors and personalities.

Very tough question! I am going to go with Jimmy Stewart, but only because you said to pick one. Tomorrow, I will chose Henry Fonda. Loved the two of them together in the movie "The Cheyenne Social Club".

Definitely Sherry. Individually they were both good but, when working together, they were unbeatable.

No contest. Jimmy Stewart....I miss the guy. Jimmy young. Jimmy old. Jimmy in between. Probably my all time favorite.

Distant seconds: Gene Kelly, Robert Cummings, and James Cagney.

James Cagney is NOT a distant second!!!!!!!!!!!!! And much as I liked Robert Cummings, I would never have thought to include him in this group. What roles are you thinking of? About the only memorable roles I can recall were in Sabateur (one of my favorites) and My Geisha (another delight).

The fact that Henry Fonda spawned Jane is the deal breaker for me. I also admire Jimmy Stewart's military career. When I was stationed in Hawaii, I discovered my office used to belong to Brig. General Jimmy Stewart. For the two years I was there, women still stopped by to look at it. I guess they were hoping that some of the air molecules he breathed were still around.

Wow! It must have felt amazing to occupy an office once used by such a great guy.

Of course Fonda also put on a uniform when the war began, though his Navy career was fairly modest. (At least he didn't spend the entire war stateside.)

Can't blame you about Hanoi Jane. The thought of a few thousand of my Nam brothers someday pissing on her grave gives me a fair degree of comfort.

As most of you no doubt know, Fonda and Stewart were good friends, and even roommates before the war. And as you can guess, they had differing political views. Once they even got into a political argument that escalated into a fistfight. I don't know who got the better of it - both of them were pretty scrawny in their younger days - but they agreed afterward to never talk politics again, and the friendship endured.

It's impossible for me to choose between them. Besides, I'm a Bogart kind of guy.

Both actors had great qualities both on and off the screen and it reflected in the characters they played. So this question will be like other questions posed in the realm of pop culture (Ginger or Mary-Ann, Jan or Marcia).

I liked Jimmy Stewart because he appeared more than any other actor in Alfred Hitchcock's

films. Henry Fonda was okay. I see NBC's Brian Williams as a young Jimmy Stewart.

Jimmy Stewart, no contest! - I was wondering, does Nicholas Cage remind you of him alittle in sound and vision but lacking the same kudos? I know he belongs to the Ford Coppola clan, but still the physical resemblance is the darnest thing! Just sayin'....

Yes, I agree there is a resemblence between Nicholas Cage and Jimmy Stewart but also

Brian Williams. Lester Holt has the allure of Cary Grant. Compliments meant to both

You know I really think that Henry Fonda was the better actor, technically, but as far as likeability goes Stewart gets my vote. Cary Grant isn't even in the running:)

There are many suggestions for favourite actors/actresses made here, but the topic really is limited to Fonda and Stewart. In this circumstance I would think we should be considering the whole body of work of both of those actors before making a decision. My problem stated previously is that I see that both are so great, and differ from each other, that I simply cannot decide between them.

Merle you sure know how to make people think, this was a very hard thread. The grapes of wrath was one of Fonda's best IMO. On golden pond place two of my favorites together Fonda and Kathine I have read her autoB. she was a corker...lol great thread by the way.
